Govt Honours Phunjo Lama, Fastest Female Everest Climber, on World Tourism Day

On the occasion of World Tourism Day, the government of Nepal honoured record-holding mountaineer Phunjo Jhangmu Lama for her incredible achievements in promoting adventure tourism on a global scale. At an event in Kathmandu, Acting Prime Minister Prakash Man Singh felicitated Phunjo for her extraordinary feat of becoming the fastest woman to scale Mt. Everest, reaching the summit in just 14 hours and 31 minutes during the last spring season.

Phunjo Lama, hailing from Chhokangpaaro village in Tsum Valley, Gorkha, is a true trailblazer in the world of mountaineering. Not only did she set the record for the fastest female ascent of Everest, but she also completed the round trip from Base Camp to Everest Summit and back in a remarkable 24 hours and 26 minutes. Her descent alone, from the summit to base camp, took just 9 hours and 18 minutes.

Honoured for Outstanding Contributions to Nepal's Tourism

The honouring ceremony, held on World Tourism Day, saw the participation of Minister for Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation, along with high-level government and industry representatives. Phunjo’s accomplishments were celebrated as an inspiration to adventurers worldwide, and her role in promoting Nepal's adventure tourism was widely praised.

Reclaiming Her Title

Phunjo’s record-breaking career didn’t stop at Everest. After being part of the TAG Nepal Everest Expedition, she reclaimed her title following her previous achievement in 2018, when she reached the Everest summit in 39 hours and 6 minutes. Though her record was broken in 2021 by Ada Tsang Yin-hung of Hong Kong, Phunjo’s determination to reclaim her status as the fastest female Everest climber exemplifies her indomitable spirit.

A Pioneer in Rescue and Rural Support

Phunjo is not just a climber; she’s also Nepal's first female helicopter long-line rescuer, further cementing her reputation as a pioneer in high-altitude rescue operations. Her courageous efforts have earned her the prestigious Tenzing-Hilary Award, one of Nepal’s top honours for mountaineers.

In addition to her mountaineering accomplishments, Phunjo is dedicated to supporting rural communities in Nepal, particularly in her home region of Gorkha, helping improve livelihoods through sustainable tourism and local development initiatives.

Phunjo Lama's achievements continue to elevate Nepal's global standing in the world of adventure tourism. As she receives yet another well-deserved honour on World Tourism Day, her legacy as a record-breaking mountaineer and a role model for future generations is solidified. Phunjo’s journey from the remote Tsum Valley to the heights of Everest is a testament to the power of perseverance, inspiring mountaineers and adventurers around the world.
