Nepal-China Friendly Dragon Boat Race Festival Kicks Off in Pokhara

The vibrant and exciting second edition of the Nepal-China Friendly Dragon Boat Race Festival has officially begun at the picturesque Fewa Lake in Pokhara. The festival is set to strengthen the cultural and grassroots ties between Nepal and its neighbour China, while also boosting Nepal’s tourism sector.

"With the collaborative efforts of local government bodies and the Chinese Embassy in Nepal, the Dragon Boat Festival promises to enhance Nepal’s international visibility while celebrating the power of sport and culture."

This year’s event, which will run through Monday, has attracted a diverse group of participants from Nepal, China, and Singapore. A total of 20 teams are competing, with 129 players from Chengdu, China, having flown in on a chartered flight on December 26 to join the festivities.

The festival is a collaborative effort between the Gandaki Provincial GovernmentPokhara Metropolitan City, the Chinese Embassy in Nepal, and the Nepal Tourism Board. The event features a mix of 8 teams from China, 1 from Singapore, and 11 Nepali teams, including representatives from various regions and organizations such as GandakiBagmatiKarnaliTribhuvan Army ClubDragon Boat GandakiBegnas TeamRupa Lake Team, and the Nepal Rafting Agencies Association (NARA).

The competition consists of two exciting categories: the 500-meter and 200-meter races. Teams will battle it out for a cash prize, with the winners of each race receiving USD 5,000. The runners-up and third-place finishers will also be rewarded with cash prizes of USD 2,000 and USD 1,200, respectively.

As the race unfolds over the next few days, this exciting festival not only showcases the spirit of international cooperation but also highlights Pokhara as a prime destination for adventure and cultural tourism in Nepal.
